Advice and Guidance

Distances and Size
Australia covers an area almost as large as the USA, and considerably larger than Europe and North Asia (China and Japan). Click on the country to see comparative maps.

Airlines service all major capitals and many regional cities, this is the preferable way to travel these distances, although luxurious train travel is also available between many major centres. Highways between major capitals range from sealed surface, divided 2-3 lanes each way (Melbourne - Sydney) to sealed surface, undivided single lane both ways in many other places.

Distance examples in Kilometers (kms) - [for miles, multiply x 0.6]:

Capital City City Kms
Perth Melbourne 3440
Melbourne Sydney 880
Melbourne Albury 305
Adelaide Melbourne 735
Adelaide Mildura 400
Adelaide Sydney 1425
Brisbane Sydney 980
Brisbane Cairns 1720
Hobart Launceston 205
Sydney Canberra 290
Sydney Alice Springs 2825
Alice Springs Uluru 460

Road conditions and speed limits
Highways and metropolitan roads accessing wine regions are all sealed.
Within regional areas away from the major cities roads are narrower and whilst many are sealed, minor roads within wine regions are often unsealed.
Open road speed limits are generally 100 - 110 kph or 60 - 65 mph on most highways, except near and in towns and around roadworks. Adequate signs are provided to advise these limits.

Cautions
Australian vehicles are right hand drive and we drive on the left hand side of the road. Many native animals, particularly kangaroos may be present around dusk away from the city; pleasant to see, but not to meet by accident.

Unsealed roads may be unfamiliar to our international visitors and should be negotiated with care and avoided for long trips. Common sense and lower speeds are recommended within the wine regions. If you are intending to 4WD advice and maps are available from many sources.

Wine Region Tours strongly advises all visitors to consume wine in moderation and therefore suggests the services of a designated driver. Please ask us for further advice if you are planning a self drive tour.

Conditions applying to Rent-a-Cars should be checked with the operator.

Phylloxera and you !

Visitors who enjoy visiting wine regions should respect any signs requesting people not to enter their vineyards.

These may be present where there is a danger of spreading phylloxera (a grapevine disease) either to or from the vineyard. Ideally do not walk or drive in vineyards at all, however, if moving between vineyards, particularly between regions or states, strict hygiene should be followed by cleaning shoes and removing mud and dirt from vehicles.

Protection of Australia's wine industry may be at your feet.
